EMS Engine Management System · Scania · 3 variants

Code 5848 (decimal). Some diagnostic tools show it in hexadecimal as 16D8.

In short

NOx sensor T131 downstream of particulate filter indicates too low a value.

Variant 1: NOx sensor T131, level of nitrogen oxide too low

Applies to: EMS10

What does Scania EMS fault code 5848 mean?

NOx sensor T131 downstream of particulate filter indicates too low a value.

What causes Scania DTC 5848?

- Fault in the NOx sensor. - The NOx sensor is fitted outside the exhaust stream.

How to fix Scania EMS fault code 5848?

  1. Check that NOx sensor T131 is fitted correctly.
  2. If no other faults are found, renew the NOx sensor.
  3. Verification Verify that the fault is rectified by running Exhaust gas aftertreatment, function test SCR.
  4. Check that the fault code has been deactivated.

Variant 2

Applies to: EMS S8

Detection

NOx sensor T131 upstream of the SCR catalytic converter indicates a value which is too low.

Possible cause

- Fault in the NOx sensor. - The NOx sensor is fitted outside the exhaust flow.

System reaction

The fault affects the engine's nitrous oxide emissions. Depending on the emission class it will result in torque reduction, speed limitation and a warning lamp. Note: If the NOx sensor is subsequently fitted outside of the exhaust stream, the applicable legislation cannot be observed.

How to fix

  1. Check that the NOx sensor is fitted correctly.
  2. If no other faults are found, renew the sensor.
  3. Verification Verify that the fault has been rectified by running Exhaust gas aftertreatment, operational testing of SCR > Select test stage > Check NOx sensor.
  4. Check that the fault code has been deactivated.
  5. Check that the NOx sensor is fitted correctly.
  6. If no other faults are found, renew the sensor.
  7. Verification Verify that the fault has been rectified by running EMS > E44 > S8 > Exhaust gas aftertreatment, operational testing of SCR, select test stage Check NOx sensor.
  8. Check that the fault code has been deactivated.
  9. Check that the NOx sensor is fitted correctly.
  10. If no other faults are found, renew the sensor.
  11. Start the engine and run under load.
  12. Check the amount of dosed reductant via Check component V117, when the amount is greater than 0: Check via Checking component T131 that the NOx sensor starts within 15 minutes.
  13. Clear the fault code.
  14. Check that the NOx sensor is fitted correctly.
  15. If no other faults are found, renew the sensor.
  16. Verification Verify that the fault has been rectified by running Exhaust gas aftertreatment, operational testing of SCR > Select test stage > Check NOx sensor.
  17. Check that the fault code has been deactivated.
  18. Proceed as follows to extinguish the emissions warning lamp:
  19. Turn the starter key to the locking position.
  20. Wait until the button for the hazard warning signal has been extinguished.
  21. Turn the starter key to drive mode.
  22. Check that the fault code has been deactivated.
  23. Clear the fault code.
  24. Turn the starter key between the lock position and drive mode 3 times.
  25. Wait until the hazard warning signal button has been extinguished between each turn.
  26. The emissions warning lamp should then be extinguished. | Check that the NOx sensor is correctly fitted.
  27. If no other faults are found, renew the sensor.
  28. Verification Verify that the fault is rectified by running Exhaust gas aftertreatment, function test SCR > Select test stage > Checking the NOx sensor.
  29. Check that the fault code has been deactivated. | Check that the NOx sensor is correctly fitted.
  30. If no other faults are found, renew the sensor.
  31. Verification Verify that the fault is rectified by running EMS > E44 > S8 > Exhaust gas aftertreatment, function test SCR, select test stage Checking the NOx sensor.
  32. Check that the fault code has been deactivated. | Check that the NOx sensor is correctly fitted.
  33. If no other faults are found, renew the sensor.
  34. Start the engine and run the engine under load.
  35. Check the amount of dosed reductant through the Checking component V117, when the amount is greater than 0: Check via Checking component T131 that the NOx sensor starts within 15 minutes.
  36. Clear the fault code. | Check that the NOx sensor is correctly fitted.
  37. If no other faults are found, renew the sensor.
  38. Verification Verify that the fault is rectified by running Exhaust gas aftertreatment, function test SCR > Select test stage > Checking the NOx sensor.
  39. Check that the fault code has been deactivated.
  40. Proceed as follows to extinguish the emissions warning lamp.
  41. Turn the starter key to the locking position.
  42. Wait until the button for the hazard warning signal has been extinguished.
  43. Turn the starter key to the drive position.
  44. Check that the fault code has been deactivated.
  45. Clear the fault code.
  46. Turn the starter key to the drive position and then back to the locking position 3 times.
  47. Wait until the button for the hazard warning signal has extinguished between each turn.
  48. The emissions warning lamp should then be extinguished.
