What causes Scania DTC 5838?

Fault in NOx sensor or incorrectly fitted NOx sensor. Note: If the NOx sensor is subsequently fitted outside of the exhaust stream the applicable legislation cannot be met.

How does the system react?

The fault affects the engine's nitrous oxide emissions. Depending on the emission class, it will result in torque reduction, speed limitation and a warning indication.

How to fix Scania EMD fault code 5838?

  1. Only applies to vehicles with Euro 4 or Euro 5:
  2. Check NOx sensor T115 and that it is fitted correctly.
  3. Check via component T115 that the NOx content changes during acceleration.
  4. If the NOx sensor indicates a static value, renew the NOx sensor.
  5. Verification Verify that the fault is rectified by running Exhaust gas aftertreatment, function test SCR.
  6. Proceed as follows to extinguish the emissions warning lamp:
  7. Turn off the power with the starter key.
  8. Wait until the button for the hazard warning signal has been extinguished.
  9. Switch on the voltage with the starter key.
  10. Check that the fault code has been deactivated.
  11. Clear the fault code.
  12. Turn the starter key to drive mode and then back to the lock position 3 times.
  13. Wait until the button for the hazard warning signal has gone out between each turn.
  14. The emissions warning lamp should then be extinguished.
  15. Only applies to vehicles with Euro 6
  16. Check NOx sensor T115 and that it is fitted correctly.
  17. Check via component T115 that the NOx content changes during acceleration.
  18. If the NOx sensor indicates a static value, renew the NOx sensor.
  19. Verification Verify that the fault is rectified by running Exhaust gas aftertreatment, function test SCR.
  20. Check that the fault code has been deactivated.
  21. Clear the fault code.
