How to fix Scania EMS fault code 1161?
- Delete fault codes.
- Turn off the power with the starter key.
- Switch on the voltage.
- If the fault code recurs, renew the control unit.
Variant 2
Applies to: EMS S7
Detection
The EGR proportional valve has an electrical fault.
Possible cause
Possible causes: - Open circuit or short circuit to ground in the proportional valve circuit. - The proportional valve contacts, harness-to-harness connectors or electrical cables are defective or disconnected.
System reaction
The engine control unit switches off the EGR circuit and the engine power is reduced. The fault code can be cleared when it is not active.
How to fix
- Check the EGR proportional valve and the circuit components, connectors and electrical cables.
- Check that the resistance in the EGR actuator is about 30 ohms at 20°C.
- Check that the repair has been carried out correctly by running the engine above 60°C with an input air pressure of more than 7 bar.
- Then allow the engine to idle for 10 seconds.
- If the repair has been carried out correctly, the fault code should then be inactive.
- If the operating time since the fault code was generated exceeds 10 hours, drain the EGR cooler as there is a risk that condensed water will form in the air-cooled EGR cooler when the EGR circuit has been switched off.
- Drain according to instructions in the Workshop Manual, sub-group 01-65.
Variant 3: Valve block for EGR

Detection
Valve block V107 has an electrical fault.
Possible cause
The fault may be due to: - Open circuit or short circuit to ground or battery in circuit for valve block V107. - The valve block contacts, harness-to-harness connectors or electrical cables being defective or disconnected.
System reaction
When a fault code is generated, the engine control unit switches off the EGR circuit. The fault affects the engine's nitrous oxide emissions. Depending on the emission class it will result in torque reduction, speed limitation or a warning lamp. The fault code cannot be deleted when it is active.
How to fix
- Check the valve block V107 along with the circuit components, harness-to-harness connectors and electrical cables.
- Applies only to vehicles with Euro 5: If the operating time since the fault code was generated exceeds 10 hours, drain the EGR cooler.
- The reason for this is that there is a risk that condensed water has formed in the air-cooled EGR cooler while the EGR circuit was switched off.
- Drain the EGR cooler according to the instructions in the Workshop Manual > 01-65 EGR system > Air-cooled EGR cooler.
