Scania EMS DTC 5885 Temperature sensor

EMS Engine Management System · Scania · 3 variants

Code 5885 (decimal). Some diagnostic tools show it in hexadecimal as 16FD.

In short

The value from temperature sensor T158 at the silencer intake differs from the expected value. Side-by-side comparisons between the 3 temperature sensors, T158, indicate implausible values. The fault is detected within 60 minutes when driving with load, not when idling.

Variant 1

Applies to: EMS10

What does Scania EMS fault code 5885 mean?

The value from temperature sensor T158 at the silencer intake differs from the expected value. Side-by-side comparisons between the 3 temperature sensors, T158, indicate implausible values. The fault is detected within 60 minutes when driving with load, not when idling.

What causes Scania DTC 5885?

- Fuel leakage from e.g. the fuel injector in the cylinder head to the exhaust gas flow. - Oil leakage from e.g. the turbocharger to the exhaust gas flow. - Fault in the temperature sensor T158. - An exhaust system that has been tampered with results in a low air flow through the oxidation catalytic converter and the particulate filter. - Fault in the charge air pressure sensor T122.

How to fix Scania EMS fault code 5885?

  1. Check fault codes related to the fuel system and gas exchange system.
  2. Rectify the fault codes. - 2.
  3. Check the exhaust gas temperature when the fault code is generated.
  4. If only one of the values is implausible and indicates e.g. less than 0°C or more than 600°C compared with the other values, it is probably a fault on temperature sensor T158.
  5. Go to T158, Temperature sensor and check that: - the values for the different temperatures sensors change.
  6. Temperature sensor T158 is correctly assembled.
  7. Oil or fuel leaks can cause temperature increases, run Manual check for oil in the silencer.
  8. Run Exhaust gas aftertreatment, particulate filter operational test and select Checking the temperature sensor.
  9. Run Fuel leak test to find any faulty fuel injectors.
  10. Check that the exhaust system has not been tampered with.
  11. Check that the flow through the charge air system is normal under: T122, Charge air pressure sensor.
  12. For verification: Run Exhaust gas aftertreatment, particulate filter operational test and select Checking the temperature sensor.

Variant 2

Applies to: EMS S8

Detection

Temperature sensor T158 upstream of the oxidation catalytic converter differs from the expected value. Side-by-side comparisons between the three T158 temperature sensors indicate implausible values.

Possible cause

- Fuel or oil leaks into the exhaust gas flow, e.g. from the fuel injector in the cylinder heads or injection valve V185, oil from the turbocharger. - Fault in the temperature sensor T158. - An exhaust system that has been tampered with results in a low air flow through the oxidation catalytic converter and the particulate filter. - Fault in mass flow sensor T126. - Fault in charge air pressure sensor T122.

System reaction

Particulate filter regeneration is not possible. The fault affects the engine's emissions of nitrogen oxides. Depending on the emission class it will result in torque reduction, speed limitation and a warning lamp. Detected within 60 minutes when driving under load, not while idling.

How to fix

  1. Check and rectify fault codes relating to the fuel system, V185 injection valve and the gas exchange system.
  2. Check the exhaust gas temperature on generation of the fault code.
  3. If only one of the values is implausible and indicates e.g. less than 0°C or more than 600°C compared with the other values, it is probably a fault on temperature sensor T158.
  4. Go to T158, Temperature sensor and check that: - the values for the different temperatures sensors change. - temperature sensor T158 is fitted correctly.
  5. Oil or fuel leaks can cause temperature increases, run Manual check for oil in the silencer.
  6. Run Exhaust gas aftertreatment, particulate filter operational test and select Checking the temperature sensor.
  7. Run Fuel leak test to find any faulty fuel injectors.
  8. Check that the exhaust system has not been tampered with.
  9. Check that the flow through the charge air system is normal under:
  10. T126, mass flow sensor, only applies to engines with EGR.
  11. T122, charge air pressure sensor, only applies to engines without EGR.
  12. Check the injection valve for exhaust gas aftertreatment, if fitted, run Exhaust gas aftertreatment, troubleshooting injection valve.
  13. Injection valve V185 is only found on certain 5 cylinder engines.
  14. Verification Run Exhaust gas aftertreatment, particulate filter operational test and select Checking the temperature sensor.

Variant 3

Applies to: EMS S8 (S8PDE)

Detection

Temperature sensor T158 upstream of the oxidation catalytic converter differs from the expected value. Side-by-side comparisons between the three T158 temperature sensors indicate implausible values.

Possible cause

- Fault in the temperature sensor T158. - Fuel or oil leaks into the exhaust gas flow, e.g. from the fuel injector in the cylinder heads or from the turbocharger. - An exhaust system that has been tampered with results in a low air flow through the oxidation catalytic converter and the particulate filter. - Fault in combined sensor T47.

System reaction

Particulate filter regeneration is not possible. The fault affects the engine's emissions of nitrogen oxides. Depending on the emission class it will result in torque reduction, speed limitation and a warning lamp. Detected within 60 minutes when driving under load, not while idling.

How to fix

  1. Check fault codes related to the fuel system or gas exchange system.
  2. Run Functions > Check > Powertrain > Emission control > Exhaust gas aftertreatment > Exhaust gas aftertreatment, particulate filter function test, which contains a side-by-side comparison of the temperature sensors.
  3. Run Functions > Check > Powertrain > Engine > Basic engine > Cylinder output test.
  4. Run Functions > Check > Powertrain > Engine > Basic engine > Cylinder balancing.
  5. Remove the exhaust hose from the silencer.
  6. Look for fuel and oil leaks in the exhaust system between the engine and silencer.
  7. If there is oil in the exhaust system, check for oil leaks in the turbocharger.
  8. Check whether there is black or white smoke when accelerating, which indicates a fault in a fuel injector or the wrong air and fuel conditions.
  9. White smoke indicates hydrocarbons which can trigger the fault code.
  10. Verification Verify that the fault has been rectified by running the vehicle under load for up to 60 minutes.
