Scania BMU DTC 560 Electrical fault on RES SUB CAN

BMU Battery Management Unit · Scania · 2 variants

Code 560 (decimal). Some diagnostic tools show it in hexadecimal as 0230.

In short

Short circuit on CAN between BMU and IBU.

Variant 1

Applies to: BMU6 (RES)BMU6 (RESXA)BMU6 (RESXB)BMU6 (RESXC)BMU6 (RESXD)BMU6 (RESXE)BMU6 (RESXF)BMU6 (RESXG)BMU6 (RESXH)BMU6 (RESXI)BMU6 (RESXJ)BMU6 (RESXK)

What does Scania BMU fault code 560 mean?

Short circuit on CAN between BMU and IBU.

What causes Scania DTC 560?

Incorrect cable routing on RES SUB CAN: - short circuit between CAN High and CAN Low. - short circuit between CAN High and voltage supply. - short circuit between CAN High and ground. - short circuit between CAN Low and voltage supply. - short circuit between CAN Low and ground. Faulty ECU control unit on RES SUB CAN.

How does the system react?

Yellow warning indication of an electric drive system fault is displayed.

What are the symptoms?

Risk of VOR. The propulsion system stops working because the propulsion battery is not available. Direct current converter E84 (DCC) is not supplied with voltage class B and the 24 V system will drain the 24 V batteries. If the vehicle has multiple propulsion batteries: - The contactors cannot be closed on the relevant propulsion battery. - The vehicle's total battery capacity and range are reduced. If the vehicle has only one propulsion battery: - VOR. - Electrical drive of the vehicle is not possible. - The vehicle's 24 V voltage is turned off. - No charge is possible.

How to fix Scania BMU fault code 560?

  1. Check the cable harness and harness-to-component connectors for the RES sub data bus.
  2. Warning!
  3. Renewing the IBU is electrical work and must only be carried out by authorised personnel.
  4. Make the vehicle safe according to Procedures for all electrical work on hybrid vehicles.
  5. Renew defective components.
  6. Renew the IBU if the propulsion battery is the source of the fault.
  7. When renewing IBU, run Calibrating propulsion battery information.

Variant 2: Electrical fault on RES-CAN

Applies to: BMU5

Detection

Short circuit on RES-CAN. The fault code is active if the CAN check of RES-CAN has the status Off. The fault code is inactive if the CAN check does not have the status Off for 1,100 ms. The fault code is not stored: - If the 15 voltage is off. - During the first 2 seconds after the 15 voltage has been switched on. - If the supply voltage is below 22 V. - If the supply voltage is above 32 V.

Possible cause

Incorrect cable routing on RES-CAN: - short circuit between CAN High and CAN Low. - short circuit between CAN High and voltage supply. - short circuit between CAN High and ground. - short circuit between CAN Low and voltage supply. - short circuit between CAN Low and ground. Faulty ECU control unit on RES-CAN.

System reaction

Yellow warning indication of an electric drive system fault is displayed.

Symptoms

If the vehicle has multiple propulsion batteries: - The contactors cannot be closed on the relevant propulsion battery. - The vehicle's total battery capacity and range are reduced. If the vehicle has only one propulsion battery: - VOR. - Electric drive of the vehicle is not possible. - The vehicle's 24 V voltage is turned off. - No charge is possible.

How to fix

  1. Disconnect the 24 V battery and measure the resistance on BMU E81 between CAN-high (pin B11) and CAN-low (pin B14).
  2. The value should be close to 120 ohms.
  3. Disconnect the 24 V battery and measure the resistance on the BMU between CAN-high (pin B11) and voltage supply (pin A4).
  4. The value should be high (in Mega ohm range).
  5. Disconnect the 24 V battery and measure the resistance on the BMU between CAN-high (pin B11) and ground (pin A2).
  6. The value should be high (in Mega ohm range).
  7. Disconnect the 24 V battery and measure the resistance on the BMU between CAN-low (pin B14) and voltage supply (pin A4).
  8. The value should be high (in Mega ohm range).
  9. Disconnect the 24 V battery and measure the resistance on the BMU between CAN-low (pin B14) and ground (pin A2).
  10. The value should be high (in Mega ohm range).
  11. Disconnect one ECU unit at a time from RES-CAN and check whether the fault has disappeared.
  12. Check the propulsion battery E83, water pump M38, water pump M41 and direct current converter E84.
  13. Warning!
  14. Renewing the IBU is electrical work and must only be carried out by authorised personnel.
  15. Make the vehicle safe according to Procedures for all electrical work on hybrid vehicles.
  16. Renew defective components.
  17. Renew the IBU if the propulsion battery is the source of the fault.
  18. When renewing IBU, run Calibrating propulsion battery information.
